How we work
Shape, behavior, habitat, then color
Experienced birders identify most things before color enters the conversation. Proportions, bill shape, how it moves and where it is standing narrow the options to a handful.
Sound doubles what you find. A small set of songs learned properly each month turns a walk from six species into twenty, and most of them will never be seen at all.
The rest is repetition on one local patch. Familiarity with what is normal there is what makes the unusual bird obvious, which is why we start close to home rather than at a famous reserve.
